In the spring, the Mac Garrison, Jr., family holds the World's Largest Easter Egg Hunt in Homer on Easter Sunday on their 11-acre farm on Highway 51 South. One hundred volunteers help hide 100,000 eggs and 125 prize eggs in the lush pasture. Thousands of children participate each year. The event is listed in the Guiness Book of World Records. People have come from as far away as Texas and Pennsylvania to hunt eggs.Another well-known spring event is Georgia's Largest Sidewalk Sale held at Tanger Factory Outlets at Banks Crossing, at the intersection of Highway 441 South and Interstate I-85. ![]() Atlanta Dragway holds the Summit Racing Southern Nationals, drawing crowds of 200,000 to the Banks Crossing area. The track opens in March and has races every weekend until the close of the season in October. ![]() The North Georgia Folk Potters Festival Potters from across the southeast gather for a new tradition in Banks County by Steve Turpin, Banks County's own famous folk art potter. Potters such as Sid Luck, the Ferguson family, the Hewell family, the Meaders family, and many others bring their wares to sell in one of the largest potters' shows in the southeast. Each participating potter donates a piece of pottery for a raffle to benefit a county nonprofit group. The Homer Volunteer Fire Department treats everyone to a fireworks display on the Fourth of July, held at the Garrison's farm on Highway 51 South.![]() Heritage Days, sponsored by the chamber of commerce, is a "step back in time." The two-day weekend event kicks off with a parade of classic and antique cars, antique tractors, mule teams, carriages and floats. It is held adjacent to the horse arena on Eagles Nest Road in the Banks County Recreation Department complex. At the Heritage Village, crafters demonstrate blacksmithing, weaving, carving, pottery turning, spinning and other old traditions. Other artisans offer their finest works for sale. Bluegrass bands play throughout the day on Saturday, and a street dance is held that night. Sunday features more bluegrass and gospel music. Children of all ages enjoy many games and activities. ![]() On the day after Thanksgiving, Tanger Factory Outlets, Commerce Factory Stores and The Pottery hold the Biggest Sales of the Season. Shoppers from across Georgia, Tennessee, North Carolina and South Carolina come to take advantage of the annual Christmas shopping kick-off. ![]() ![]() A Christmas Tree Lighting is held at the Old Historic Courthouse in Homer. Church choirs sing favorite carols and Santa Claus pays a visit. Banks County residents have supported the expansion of the county's recreation facilities through a special local option sales tax. Located on Thompson Street in Homer (see street map), 100 acres of the 750-acre parcel owned by the county is dedicated to recreational facilities that include five ball fields, a full-size track, a horse arena, picnic pavilions, and a cardiovascular fitness trail. The arena is located at the recreation department, and it is home to two area horse clubs the Banks Crossing Saddle Club and the Banks County Horse Association. Both clubs hold sanctioned American Quarter Horse shows and riding exhibitions. The Banks County 4-H Horsemanship Club also holds Saddlebred riding events during the school year. Adjacent to the horse arena is a one-half mile cardiovascular fitness trail with exercise and resting stations. Two covered pavilions with picnic tables and grills are located near the fitness trail. |
